Biography
Dr. Steven Lapere was born and raised in Port Elizabeth. He completed his undergraduate medical degree at the University of the Free State in 2006. This was followed by a 2-year internship at Pietermaritzburg Hospital Complex and a year of Community Service at Kimberley Hospital, during which he completed his Diploma in Anaesthetics.
His ophthalmology career began in 2010 at Mankweng Eye Unit in Limpopo where he worked as a medical officer and attained a Diploma in Ophthalmology. He furthered his knowledge as a medical officer at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter, United Kingdom. It is here that he discovered his passion for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disorders. He started his specialist training in ophthalmology at Groote Schuur Hospital through the University of Cape Town later that year. On completion of his specialist training, he went on to sub-specialize with a 2-year fellowship in the field of Surgical Retina, Medical Retina and Ocular Oncology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Canada, through the University of Alberta from 2015 to 2017.
He has a keen interest in academic research and has presented at numerous national and international conferences. His current research projects include factors influencing the outcomes of complicated retinal detachments, the effect of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors on radiation retinopathy and prognostic factors in sutureless scleral fixation intraocualr surgery. He is a member of the Ophthalmologic Society of South Africa and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
When not at work, Dr Lapere enjoys cycling, hiking and kitesurfing. Cape Town offers the best of these, with sport and the best surrounding in all the seasons. He is married to Cherese Lapere, an anaesthetists registrar at Groote Schuur Hospital.
