First Clinical Implantation of Yttrium-90 Disc Brachytherapy after FDA Clearance
The founding CEO of The Eye Cancer Foundation also started a medical technology company called Liberty Vision which developed and implemented the first yttrium-90 (Y°) radiation disc and specialized applicators. Just published in the journal “Brachytherapy”, the title of the initial paper is “First clinical implementation of Yttrium-90 disc brachytherapy after FDA clearance.”
It is important to note that the Y-90 plaque treatments took an average of 7 minutes as compared to 7 days with standard low-dose rate plaques. In addition, the Y-90 plaques required no sutures and only one surgery. That meant that the patients did not have to stay for days in the hospital or home with a device attached to their eye. With HDR Y-90, all the required radiation was delivered in one quick session. In their article, Dr. Finger and co-authors showed how they carefully developed methods for radiation safety and treatment.
Though this new technology was initially employed to treat patients with eye cancers, the FDA has cleared it for episcleral treatment of tumors and benign growths. There are many neovascular and fibrovascular growths that have been successfully treated with Sr-90/Y-90 applicators. However, the new LV handheld applicators shown in this article allow for additional functionality, including light-guided, light-defined treatments.
Dr. Paul T. Finger writes: "I am pleased to announce the world's first publication on Y-90 disc brachytherapy. This new technology was initially employed to treat patients with iris, and iridociliary melanomas as well as ocular surface malignant squamous carcinoma. However, it is FDA-cleared for sale in the USA for episcleral treatment of tumors and benign growths. There are many such tumors and growths that have been treated with its predicate, Sr-90/Y-90 applicator. However, the LV handheld applicators shown in this article, allow for additional functionality, including light-guided light-defined treatments. For more information call or write [email protected]."
