ECF Donor Provides Doctor in Cambodia with an Indirect Ophthalmoscope!
March 22, 2023: Ms. Lynne Shevlin, a generous donor of The Eye Cancer Foundation, asked to make sure her donation would help children with retinoblastoma in an underserved country. Thankfully, the ECF was able to send a state-of-the-art indirect ophthalmoscope to one of our Eye Cancer Fellow Graduates, currently treating children in Cambodia.
This device is the headset worn by eye cancer specialists that allows them to see inside the child’s eye, and thereby get a clear picture of intraocular tumors. Lynne Shevlin was familiar with The Eye Cancer Foundation’s ground-breaking efforts to train eye cancer specialists that can return to their unserved or underserved countries to serve as ophthalmological oncologists. But she wanted to go further and help these newly trained eye cancer specialists to obtain basic equipment for use in their home countries. |
Utilizing a series interviews and surveys, graduates of the ECF Fellowship Program noted that they needed
specialized equipment to put their eye cancer training to practice. Here is where Lynne Shevlin stepped in. Since she has already donated equipment to fellows in other countries, she was ecstatic to get a chance to do it once again. Though she realized that solving the whole problem would be a huge undertaking, costing multiple thousands of dollars, she wanted to get the process started. So, Lynne decided to help The Eye Cancer Foundation
provide one piece of needed equipment to one former Fellow.
Lynne Shevlin’s gift paid for the purchase of a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope. In response, Dr. Lom Orng said, "I would like to express my personal gratitude to Mrs. Lynne Shevlin and The Eye Cancer Foundation for this donation. I am so thankful for all that the foundation has done and the effort you all put in, in order to make this happen. Thank you for your help. I believe this indirect ophthalmoscope will be helpful in our daily OPD clinic.”
Here we see the power of one donor helping The Eye Cancer Foundation to help one doctor. Imagine the
possibilities if more donors follow Lynne Shevlin’s initiative. Please join us in this effort.
