ABOUT:
Dr. Alberto Calle-Vásquez, MD, FACS is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Orbit and Oncology Unit at National Institute of Ophthalmology. He's also a program founder and director (oculoplastic, orbit and oncology fellowship program) at Military Central Hospital, affiliated with Nueva Granada Military University and Calle Ophthalmic Center in Bogotá, Colombia. Dr. Calle-Vásquez has had other hospital appointments, where he has developed a prestigious full time Orbit and Oncology Service in the last 23 years. He's been a post grad Medical Director at San Rafael University Hospital & Clinic for 7 consecutive years, has a specialization degree in Medical Education, Epidemiology and Critical Analysis of Scientific Literature from Los Andes University, Medical Ethics from El Bosque University and has a degree in General Manager and Marketing at the University of Los Andes. Dr. Calle was also a founder and conductor of a monthly resident meeting since 30 years ago, named: Cases of Difficult Management.
Dr. Calle-Vásquez attend his residency training at the San Rafael University Hospital & Clinic affiliated to Nueva Granada Military University in Bogotá and his fellowship in ultrasound and ophthalmic photography at Bascon Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. Later, he completed an Ocular and Orbital Oncology fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
Dr. Calle-Vásquez is an official journal reviewer for Ophthalmology, Eye, BMJ, AJO, Orbit (in Oncology and Orbit field), and international consultant in Orbit tumors for the PAAO (Pan American Association of Ophthalmology). He's been an editorial writer for Franja Ocular for six years and is member of different national and international societies:
Dr. Calle-Vásquez has authored over 9 invited articles and book chapters, has been involved in several clinical trials, aided in more than 37 peer review publication, participated in over 30 research protocols and was on the editorial board for over 10 scientific publications. He has delivered many international lectures in Latin America, North America and Europe, and has received prestigious awards including JCI (10 creative young entrepreneur award 1996), Ocular Tumors Board (AAO) 2001 and 100 best doctors in Latin America (for 10 years). Dr. Calle-Vásquez areas of interest and clinical research include, ocular and orbital oncology, immunotherapy, orbital trauma, multi-disciplinary orbit reconstructive surgery, aesthetic and non-aesthetic use of botulinum toxin and cataract surgery.
He inherited the passion for medicine, ophthalmology and surgery from his father, also a professor of ophthalmology, from an early age, which whom he worked for for several years until he passed away ten years ago. He is now married to his wife, Juliana Barreto.
Dr.Calle-Vásquez combines his scientific work with a variety of hobbies. He has been a passionate photographer from a very young age, and loved horses (like a horseback rider and polo player). Besides that, he used to practice: go karting, motorcycling, waterski and tennis. He has been involved in the wine world, and as of lately he has obtained a professional Sommelier degree from Universidad Externado de Colombia and Superior School of Gastronomy at Barcelona, Spain where you actually attend as an enology professor. He has earned the international WSET certification and has been invited to participate in many wine events around the world and as a judge as well. He has directed many wine tasting in Colombia, Brazil, Miami and Italy and is very well known in this passionate field. Twelve years ago founded a very important importer and distributer wine company (CAVAS https://cavas.com.co) in Colombia.
