Skin melanoma removed:now freckle near optic nerve

Skin melanoma removed:now freckle near optic nerve
From jcacourt, August 9, 2010
I had a desmoplastic melanoma removed from my left shoulder, July, 2010. No sentinel lymph node involvement. August 3, optometrist found a "freckle" near the optic nerve in my right eye. I have appt. with MD eye doc August 30. Has anyone else had this type of experience? What might the chances be I have a spread of the melanoma to my eye? We have Kaiser Permanente health coverage, and I am finding the more I know about my health, the better care I may be able to demand from physicians in this group.

JC, just saw your post. A freckle is a benign growth, but I'm guessing that they want to confirm that the freckle is just that (also called a mole or nevus) and doesn't have markers of melanoma. While cancer from other parts of the body can show up in the eye, I haven't seen posted what you describe. You are better off, in any event, posting on the choroidal melanoma board where many more people will see your post. I hope you'll continue to post, and let us know how your visit goes on 8/30. All the best, Lynne
