Diffuse Infiltrating Retinoblastoma: A Multi-centre, International, Data-sharing Study is Now Open-Access
November 20 2025: The Power of Numbers!
The Eye Cancer Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of this open access publication which reveals new and important information achieved by the construction, maintenance, and utilization of a secure patient data pooling online registry. Diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma often masquerades as inflammation or intraocular hemorrhage, can be mistaken for benign disease, and is thus more likely to cause harm.
The findings call for heightened awareness among eye care specialists regarding DIR as it can mimic less severe ocular pathologies, leading to diagnostic delays and poor outcomes. DIR may not show calcification on imaging or ultrasound, making it challenging to detect. Therefore, paediatric patients with unexplained unilateral glaucoma, intraocular bleeding or uveitis should undergo thorough evaluation under anaesthesia to rule out retinoblastoma, including DIR. This approach can facilitate earlier diagnosis and improve patient outcomes.
Congratulations to the AJCC-OOTF and ECF Doctor, Dr. Ankit S. Tomar for all their hard work!
