November 5, 2025: Dr. Emmanuel Orji of Nigeria just completed his ECF Fellowship under our training doctor in Kenya, Dr. Kahkai Kimani. He trained at the Kenyatta National Hospital and stood out due to his dedication, interest in ocular oncology, and hands-on care of patients.
This fellowship done with Dr. Kimani allowed Dr. Orji to obtain various skills and techniques in the field of ocular oncology. The Eye Cancer Foundation is proud to support Dr. Emmanuel Orji as he returns to practice ophthalmic oncology in Nigeria and other underserved regions in Africa. We wish Dr. Orji all the best on his future endevours.
Experience at Kenyatta National Hospital under Dr. Kimani
Dr. Orji was diligent, eager to learn and worked as part of the retinoblastoma team with minimum supervision. He
demonstrated professionalism and empathy towards patients, it was a pleasure working with him over his fellowship period.
During his fellowship, he was able to achieve the following which is captured in his logbook:
1. Clerk and examine patients with retinoblastoma
2. Offer counseling to parents of children with retinoblastoma on genetics and management of retinoblastoma
3. Carry out case based discussions on retinoblastoma
4. Participate in didactic lectures on retinoblastoma
5. Examine patients with retinoblastoma under anaesthesia and accurately grade the patient and eye, as well as formulate a treatment plan for the patients
6. Calculate chemotherapy dosage and administer chemotherapy for patients with retinoblastoma
7. Perform transpupillary thermotherapy with assistance
8. Perform triple freeze and prechemo cryoptherapy with assistance
9. Preform intravitreal chemotherapy injections independently
10. Perform myoconjunctival enucleation and orbital implant with minimal assistance
We at the Kenyatta National Hospital believe Dr. Orji is sufficiently equipped with the necessary skills to manage patients with retinoblastoma at his institution and wish him all the best in his career.
